Lotus 23B Porsche
“After Monterey I made the decision that my Lotus would have to have a different, more powerful engine if I was going to compete successfully in the under two-liter class. I went to see Otto Zipper, a Ferrari and Porsche dealer who had been running a Porsche 904 for driver Scooter Patrick. He said he would sell me a spare engine they had for thirty-one hundred dollars less carburetors. Shelby had a stock of the 48mm Weber carburetors used on the competition Cobras. I bought a pair for the discounted price of forty-six dollars apiece. I purchased a used welding set from shop foreman Jack Balch and, after work at Shelby American, started the daunting project of replicating the Burness/Follmer car in my single car garage.”
