In 1990, John teamed up with Pete Halsmer and Elliott Forbes-Robinson to drive one of the two new GTO specification Mazda RX-7s at the Daytona and Sebring endurance races. The “13J” powered RX-7 was designed by Lee Dykstra. The Mazda USA team was run by Dick St. Yves. The #1 Mazda RX-7 claimed a class pole position in its debut at the the 1990 Daytona 24 Hours. Unfortunately the car was forced to retire with engine problems.
